Pleistocene Infraspecific Evolution in Juniperus Ashei Buch
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Pleistocene and recent distributions of the taxa are discussed. A new variety of Juniperus ashei, J. ashei Buch. var. ovata R. P. Adams is recognized from west Texas and northern Mexico. It differs from typical J. ashei in having whip leaf glands that are oval to elongate rather than hemispherical, smaller female cones, smaller seeds and more seeds per cone. In addition, the leaf oil of var. ovata is higher in α-pinene, myrcene, limonene, γ-terpinene, bornyl acetate and elemol but lower in linalool, trans-sabinene hydrate, trans-p-menth-2-en-1-ol, camphor, trans carveol and carvone. RAPDs analysis revealed that the varieties are distinct in their DNA. It is hypothesized that var. ovata is a prePleistocene relict, while var. ashei is a recently (late Pleistocene Holocene) derived taxon.

Distribution of Juniperus Ashei Var. Ashei and Var. Ovata around New Braunfels, Texas
The distribution of J. ashei var. ashei and J. a. var. ovata was examined by leaf essential oils. The populational boundries between these varieties seems to be very distinct. However, there appears to be some intergradation between the two taxa near New Braunfels, Texas.
متن کاملDifferences in chemical composition between browsed and non-browsed Juniperus ashei Buch. Trees
Leaf secondary compounds were examined in browsed and non-browsed Juniperus ashei trees to identify selective browsing patterns by goats and deer. Analysis of volatile leaf oils (terpenoids) revealed that the browsed trees were lower in total oil than non-browsed trees (2.18 vs. 3.46%, DW basis). Extractable and fiber-bound condensed tannins (CT) were not different but protein-bound CT concentr...
متن کاملMolecular analysis confirms the long-distance transport of Juniperus ashei pollen
Although considered rare, airborne pollen can be deposited far from its place of origin under a confluence of favorable conditions. Temporally anomalous records of Cupressacean pollen collected from January air samples in London, Ontario, Canada have been cited as a new case of long-distance transport. Data on pollination season implicated Juniperus ashei (mountain cedar), with populations in c...

Ethnobotanical surveys indicated that in the traditional medicines worldwide, several Juniperus species are utilized as antihelmintic, diuretic, stimulant, antiseptic, carminative, stomachic, antirheumatic, antifungal, and for wound healing. In the present study, essential oils obtained from heartwood samples of Juniperus virginiana L., Juniperus occidentalis Hook. and Juniperus ashei J. Buchho...

Jun a 1, the major allergen of pollen from the mountain cedar Juniperus ashei, has been crystallized using the hanging-drop vapor-diffusion method at 277 K. The crystals are monoclinic, space group P2(1), with unit-cell parameters a = 53.38, b = 113.48, c = 72.44 A, beta = 96.36 degrees and four molecules in the unit cell. A complete 2.5 A data set has been collected at 100 K with X-rays from a...
